APA Documentation

In this passage it tries to help students like myself learn how to use apa documentation in a paper. There are many different types of citations and this passage gives you examples and how you can add them into a paper. APA can be put in footnotes, parenthetical citations that are in the text. They may include the authors name, page number that it is found on, and when it was published. This publication help me a lot to know how the appropriate way to cite in a sentence and just in a paper in general. These are things that I did not know before I read this. The examples that are given in this paper help a lot because not only does it explain the process word for word but it also shows you in a way that you can follow and easily put to use in your paper. It even gives examples for if there is more than one author. This is something that can occur frequently and that you would need to know how to cite this properly to completely finish the citation. For almost any kind of problem you may run into when citing is explained in great detail and an example is given. This answers almost any question that someone may have towards how they may do this properly. This was very useful and answered a lot of my questions that I had and helped me to do them properly when needed and it was something I have never done before.

How Campus Censors Squelch Freedom of Speech

In this book they use an expample of a white male that is trying to post a flyer on a buliten board showing that a writter is coming and the name of the publication. Some students found it offensive and treatened to call the campus security. So the man left but someone did call and he was reported to spreading racailly offensive materials. The campus police did get the man for disruption all because some people felt that it was not exceptable to have that title published on a paper. Was he wrong? All he did was try to publisize that a writter was coming to campus to discuse her writting. But all because of the title people sought out to make sure that he was punished. Some students argued that because the school gives the student body power to veto anything that is shown to the public that what happened to the man was exceptable and that no one was in the wrong. This school is not the only one that punishes students for speech that they disaprove of. Although the amount of students punished for speech that people may find offensive or inapropriate has dramaticly declined over the years it is still something that happens very often on the campus. However campus censorship is still alive and well and is often justified under the sexual harrasment rules. But if the censorship was kept completely in the hands of the student then chaos would break out. So in many ways it is best that there is some backbone to what students can write and publish. They help to lower the amount of people hurt by what is published on campus and that others can see. Some take it as far as expelling the student or pressing charges if the publication is bad enough to warent it.

Pornography, Obscenity, and the Case for Censorship

Many people fought against censorship but they got more than they bargained for. Yes they got many books published that may have been slightly offensive but with it they brought in the era of porn and other such publications. Many say that this is the exact opposite of what they wanted. They say that "what reason is there to think that anyone was ever corrupted by a book?" and that is true and what they were fighting for. All they wanted was the free publication of books that in the past have been said to be slightly offensive. But people took it to the extreme and have profited big from it. But at what cost? New York city has been corrupted by this new sale of profain magazines or movies. So instead of worrying about the books corrupting children and our youth now we have to worry about a whole new kind of smut or provacative publications. Some people feel that if you have never been corrupted by a book than you have never truely learned or experience controversal ideas. So isnt porn and other provacative publications art? Where is the line drawn not only between ideas but laws and how we plan to stop of limit who is exposed to these "adult" entertainment. Some feel that pornography tourtures or harms how a person experiences life, it can take away free spirit but does it? It is a persons choice to watch or read these items. They may argue that if this is aloud to pass as entertainment then so should the acts performed in the Roman Coloseum. But is a act of death and violence the same as this porn? One of the many facts is that no one is forced to watch these things and they still have their free will but it showing up in movies that their children watch is something that has been left up to the parents to help censor. THis may not stop children from watching said publications but in many ways it gets the parents involved in the kids lives. People will do anything to become famous and rich. I feel that although porn is a dirty and something that i do not need that it is not hurting anyone but is just another color in our country.

Television News: The Language of Pictures

Telivision and news sum up all of the events at hand in a short amount of time. In many cases they are call recreations and they come to us in language and pictures. They take a one page and turn it into a one hour show and they can do this by showing pictures. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words by (Postman and powers pg 406) and in many ways this is true. A picture can sum up alot like feelings problems and pretty much anything you want. In many ways moving pictures are sort of like a language in themselves. Just a single picture can be limited to what it says but added with words it can tell a whole story. Adding music to the pictures can further add to the picture and the feeling that it is trying to convey. Photos can also represent a time or document it. Like it a ransom photo they show the person holding a newspaper or something else that may have a date or a photo from a particular day that can show the specific day and time. But a picture can also leave a lot out about what is going on. Like a picture of a car on a road but without signs. This picture may show a car or a family but not where the car is or if it is moving. But with the addition of smoke or moving rain u can tell if the car is moving or coming to a stop. With just these simple additions you can add a lot to a photo and help to tell the story better. This is why people perfer moving pictures because they can show not only one but many photos that can help to explain and tell the story better. They not only explain but they keep the viewer interested if it is something that many people may not find as something they would listen to. However if you add a few pictures or a short news real then people can watch and it helps to keep their attention a lot longer than if it was just someone talking for an hour. I agree with all of this. I can not watch the news most times because i am not interested in the topic but when photos or videos are used i find it easier and better to watch.

Selection, Slanting, and Charged Language

Slanting has always taken place in the written language. Weather it is written or spoken it is still the same concept and it is for the same reasons. Slanting is defined as the process of selecting knowledge- factual and attitudinal, words and, emphasis, to achieve the intention of the communicator. ( Birk pg 395) You can add emphasis but using italics. This will help to slant the viewer’s attention or you can stress a word in the sentence. Question marks comas exclamations and other punctuations can also add to slanting. It is impossible to put two facts together without giving some slant or emphasis. Slanting is not always about how you add a word or change the way it may look, it can also be just by simply not putting in facts that are against your argument or your topic. When writing a sentence a good way to slant is by using charged words. Charged words can be words that help to describe something further in depth or using good action words that give the reader a better feeling or idea about the passage. In spoken language you can help to show a slant by the way you raise or lower your voice. However not all of the time do you have to show a slant by words, hand motions and facial expressions can also add to the feeling and slant of the conversation. I use slanted language almost every time I talk and so do most people. It is just a way of speech that we all take part in.
